I evacuated each circuit down to about 70 microns, a very low pressure, which is essential for the system's longevity and efficiency. A decay test, where the vacuum is held for an extended period, confirms the absence of leaks. Manipulating the ball valves during the vacuum process helps dislodge any trapped air or moisture, ensuring a truly dry system.
Third, precise refrigerant charging is vital. Mini-splits are critically charged, meaning the amount of refrigerant must be exact based on the line set lengths. Over or undercharging can severely impact performance. The variable speed fans on the Pioneer outdoor units are also a key feature, allowing them to adjust their speed based on the load, which significantly reduces noise levels. These units are incredibly quiet, even when running at a good clip.

Math & Run-Time Numbers
The financial savings were substantial, exceeding $20,000 compared to professional quotes for a similar 9-zone system. Pioneer specifies torque settings for their flare nuts; for a 3/8-inch line, a minimum of 32.7 Newton-meters is recommended, which I achieved with a digital torque wrench.
During the vacuuming process, I consistently pulled each circuit down to approximately 70 microns. After a 15-minute decay test, the highest vacuum rise observed was about 415 microns over a couple of hours, well within the acceptable range (typically below 500 microns). My robust vacuum pump was able to reach 70 microns in about 10 minutes flat per circuit, which is impressive.
In mid-January, with outdoor temperatures around 17-18°F (-7 to -8°C), the heat pumps were producing discharge air temperatures of 101-104°F (38-40°C), effectively keeping the indoor ambient temperature around 68-69°F (20°C). This demonstrates excellent performance even in cold conditions.
Pros & Cons
On the upside, the cost savings of a DIY installation were immense. The independent zone control is a game-changer, allowing each room to be set to its ideal temperature. The Pioneer units are incredibly quiet, especially compared to my old central HVAC system. Their compact indoor heads allowed me to remove old ductwork, significantly increasing ceiling height in my basement.
However, this is not a project for the faint of heart. Handling high-pressure refrigerants and high-voltage electricity requires proper licensing (like an EPA Universal certification) and a deep understanding of HVAC principles. There's a real risk of property damage, personal injury, or even death if mistakes are made. Additionally, while Pioneer's customer support is top-notch, factory flares can be subpar, necessitating re-flaring.
When To Use This vs. Alternatives
This DIY mini-split installation is ideal for homeowners and skilled tinkerers who are comfortable with complex technical work and willing to invest in quality tools and education. It offers substantial cost savings and superior comfort control compared to traditional central HVAC systems. If your existing central system is failing, inefficient, or if you desire individual zone control and energy efficiency, a multi-zone mini-split is a fantastic upgrade. For homes with low ceiling clearances, removing bulky ductwork can dramatically improve living space. If you're not comfortable with the technical aspects, professional installation is the safest alternative, albeit at a significantly higher cost.
