Bodega T36: Real-World Tests of This Sweet 12V Cooler

Spoiler alert: the Bodega T36 12V compressor cooler is pretty darn sweet. It passed all the tests I put it through with flying colors, offering impressive versatility and efficiency for its price point.

What I Built

The Bodega T36 arrived well-packaged. Unboxing revealed the cooler itself, along with a power brick, an AC cord, a 12/24V DC cable, and an instruction manual. The unit features dual compartments, with removable wire baskets and a central divider. A drain plug in the bottom of each compartment is a thoughtful addition.

The cooler is equipped with a USB port on the control panel, which is handy for charging small devices. For portability, it has sturdy wheels on one end and both a recessed handle and an extended handle on the other, making it easy to roll or carry.

Why It Works

The Bodega T36 utilizes a compressor, similar to a home refrigerator, allowing it to actively cool its contents down to freezing temperatures, unlike traditional ice chests. Its dual-zone design means you can set different temperatures for each compartment, using one as a fridge and the other as a freezer simultaneously. The instruction manual notes that the left zone's temperature cannot be set lower than the right zone's, aligning with the "Fridge" and "Freezer" labels inside.

Thermal mass plays a crucial role in efficiency. A full cooler stays cold longer and requires the compressor to run less frequently than an empty one. My tests were conducted with an empty cooler, representing a worst-case scenario for power consumption and cooling times.

I ran several tests to evaluate the Bodega T36's performance:

  1. Single-Zone Cooling (71°F to 32°F): Starting from an ambient temperature of 71°F, the cooler (in MAX mode, empty) reached 32°F in just 19 minutes and 29 seconds.
  2. Single-Zone Freezing (32°F to 0°F): Continuing from 32°F, the cooler reached 0°F in an additional 42 minutes and 5 seconds. This means it went from 71°F to 0°F in approximately 1 hour, 1 minute, and 34 seconds.
  3. Dual-Zone Cooling (0°F Freezer / 32°F Fridge): With the divider in place, I set the right side to 0°F (freezer) and the left side to 32°F (fridge). It took 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 50 seconds to achieve these target temperatures. The app confirmed the manual's rule: I couldn't set the left (fridge) zone colder than the right (freezer) zone, as the controls automatically adjusted to prevent this.
  4. 24-Hour Power Consumption (Dual Zone, ECO Mode, Empty): Running for approximately 25 hours (0°F / 32°F), the cooler consumed a total of 38Ah or 0.5kWh from the 100Ah LiFePO4 battery, leaving 64% remaining. Idle phantom power draw was about 2W for electronics.
  5. 24-Hour Power Consumption (Single Zone, 0°F, ECO Mode, Empty): In a similar 24-hour test, with the entire unit set to a single 0°F zone, the cooler consumed 32Ah or 0.4kWh. This was slightly less power than the dual-zone setup, indicating marginal efficiency gains when operating as a single freezer.

When To Use This vs. Alternatives

The Bodega T36 is ideal for anyone needing reliable portable refrigeration or freezing on the go. Campers, road-trippers, boat owners, and those with off-grid setups will find its efficiency and dual-zone capability invaluable. Compared to traditional coolers, it eliminates the need for ice, saving space and preventing soggy food.
