The Reolink Argus 4 Pro security camera promises a lot, boasting a 180-degree ultra-wide view and color night vision that makes it feel like the holy grail of wireless home surveillance.
Disclosure: Reolink sent this unit for testing. All opinions and test results are my own.
What I Built
I recently installed the Reolink Argus 4 Pro at my parents' house, pairing it with its dedicated solar panel. This setup was a bit different from my own extensive Reolink PoE system—which features 16 cameras I installed myself five years ago—and it’s been working flawlessly ever since. The goal with this new Argus 4 Pro was to test its completely wireless capabilities.
The installation process was straightforward. I mounted the camera and its solar panel to a downspout using the included straps, opting for a non-drill approach. The solar panel is positioned facing due west, which means it only receives direct sunlight during the latter part of the day. This placement was intentional, designed to put the camera's battery life and solar charging efficiency to the test under less-than-ideal sun exposure.
Why It Works
The Argus 4 Pro stands out with its impressive 180-degree ultra-wide field of view, achieved by seamlessly stitching together two separate camera images. This provides comprehensive coverage without blind spots, effectively giving you the perspective of two cameras in one. At night, its color night vision is a game-changer, especially when augmented by the built-in spotlights that activate upon motion detection, illuminating the scene for clearer images.
Beyond its visual capabilities, the camera integrates a PIR motion sensor for accurate detection, minimizing false alarms from things like wind or moving trees. It operates completely wirelessly, connecting via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and is continuously charged by its dedicated solar panel. The accompanying Reolink app is robust, offering a wealth of features: a siren, a flashlight, multi-view options for multiple cameras, toggling audio recording, snapshot and video recording directly to your phone, and adjusting streaming quality between "clear" (highest) and "fluent" (lower bandwidth).
Customization extends to on-screen elements like the camera name and date, watermark toggles, and privacy masks to block out sensitive areas. Advanced settings allow fine-tuning of brightness and shadows, and even slight adjustments to image stitching if needed.

Math & Run-Time Numbers
I've had the Argus 4 Pro installed for just over 48 hours, with its solar panel facing west and receiving only about two hours of direct sunlight daily. Despite this limited sun exposure and my extensive testing, the battery has consistently maintained a charge, currently sitting at 80%. I observed that the two hours of direct sunlight were sufficient to recharge the battery by approximately 40%.
- Day-time Direct Sunlight Test (40 ft away): Text on a license plate was impossible to read.
- Day-time Direct Sunlight Test (25 ft away): Still impossible to read.
- Day-time Direct Sunlight Test (10 ft away): Text became clearly visible.
- Day-time Indirect Sunlight Test (40 ft away): Text was difficult to discern but somewhat legible.
- Day-time Indirect Sunlight Test (25 ft away): Text was readable.
- Day-time Indirect Sunlight Test (10 ft away): Text was "piece of cake" to read.
Night-time (NO Spotlights):
- 40 ft away: Impossible to read.
- 25 ft away: Started to become legible.
- 10 ft away: Fully readable.
Night-time (WITH Spotlights):
- 40 ft away: Difficult to read, but large characters were barely legible.
- 25 ft away: Became legible.
- 10 ft away: Very clear and easy to read.

When To Use This vs. Alternatives
The Reolink Argus 4 Pro is ideal for homeowners and DIY enthusiasts looking for a robust security solution with minimal installation fuss. If you need wide-angle coverage in areas without easy access to power outlets, its wireless and solar-powered design is a perfect fit. It's also a strong contender for those who prioritize privacy and want to avoid ongoing subscription costs for features.
However, if you require 24/7 continuous recording across multiple cameras and have the infrastructure for wired connections, a Power over Ethernet (PoE) system might be a more suitable alternative. My own 16-camera PoE setup, for instance, offers constant surveillance and has proven incredibly reliable over five years. The Argus 4 Pro excels in specific, targeted outdoor monitoring where flexibility and ease of deployment are paramount.
Bottom Line
The Reolink Argus 4 Pro truly lives up to its "Holy Grail" moniker for wireless 4K security cameras. Its 180-degree field of view, seamless image stitching, and impressive color night vision, especially with the integrated spotlights, provide comprehensive and clear surveillance. Coupled with its impressive battery life and solar charging, plus the absence of forced subscriptions, it's a solid recommendation for anyone seeking a high-performance, hassle-free outdoor security camera.
