Math & Run-Time Numbers
On a hot summer day in July, with temperatures nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit, I observed impressive output. Despite the panels being slightly heat-soaked, the 900-watt array was dumping 850 watts into the battery. This is just 50 watts shy of their combined rated output, which is exceptional for a hot day past noon (2:39 PM).
To test the shade tolerance, I conducted a series of experiments:
- Partial Shade (top half of one panel covered, panels in series): The output dropped from ~850W to 535W. This 300W hit is significant, but the system was still producing over half its original output.
- Strategic Shade (towel bridging the split on one panel): When the towel covered a section that bridged the panel's internal splits, the output plummeted to just 118W. This highlights the importance of avoiding shading across these critical points when panels are in series.
- Optimized Shade (towel moved to avoid bridging internal splits): By simply adjusting the towel to avoid bridging the internal divisions, the output immediately jumped back up to 524W. This demonstrates the power of the segmented design when used correctly.
I also recalled a previous test with the 200W Callsun panels in winter. With snow on the ground providing reflective backing, those panels produced 232W, exceeding their 200W rated capacity. This bodes well for the 450W panels in similar conditions, suggesting even higher gains could be possible.
