TST R002 E-Bike Review: Affordable Power, Real-World Range

I recently tested the TST R002 E-Bike, a moped-style electric bike with full suspension and fat tires. My goal was to see how it performed in real-world conditions, focusing on its range, hill-climbing capabilities, and braking power. Spoiler alert: this bike is a ton of fun to ride, offering a surprising bang for your buck.

What I Built

The TST R002 is a black, moped-style e-bike that arrived mostly assembled. I previously created a video detailing the unboxing and full assembly, which you can find a link to in the description below. This post focuses on putting the bike through its paces, testing its capabilities, and seeing if it lives up to its promise as a high-performance, affordable e-bike.

The bike features a long, cushy seat, front and rear suspension, fat tires, a bright headlight, and a tail light that doubles as a brake light and turn signals. It’s built for comfort and versatility, ready for both paved roads and light off-road adventures.

Why It Works

The TST R002's design emphasizes comfort and power over traditional pedaling efficiency. The moped-style setup means you can sit back and enjoy the ride, relying heavily on the throttle. The full suspension and fat tires work together to absorb bumps, providing a smoother experience, especially on rougher terrain. While the suspension felt a little stiff on some really bumpy patches, it was still a significant improvement over bikes without full suspension.

The powerful hub drive motor provides excellent torque, making acceleration responsive. This is particularly noticeable when taking off from a stoplight, where the bike has plenty of get-up-and-go. The hydraulic disc brakes are also a major plus, offering strong stopping power that instills confidence, even when descending steep hills.

Math & Run-Time Numbers

I conducted a real-world range test by riding the bike as I normally would, primarily using pedal assist 5 (the highest level) and about 90% throttle. The odometer started at 10 miles. When the battery finally died, the odometer read 42 miles.

This translates to a real-world range of approximately 32 miles on a single charge under heavy use. This is a very good result for an e-bike, especially considering it was ridden at maximum power for most of the test.

For charging, I timed how long it took to fully recharge the 48V 15Ah battery from dead. Starting at 3:24 PM, the charger light turned green at 10:13 PM, indicating a full charge. This means the battery took approximately 7 hours to charge. It's not the fastest charger, but it gets the job done overnight.

I also tested its hill-climbing abilities. On a moderately steep asphalt path, the bike easily maintained speeds up to 28 mph. On a steeper asphalt hill, it slowed to 13 mph but quickly regained speed. However, on an "insanely steep" grassy hill (throttle only), the bike struggled, dropping from 8 mph down to 4 mph before coming to a stop. This isn't a fault of the bike; it's an extreme test that most e-bikes would fail.

Pros & Cons

When To Use This vs. Alternatives

The TST R002 E-Bike is an excellent choice if you're looking for an affordable, fun, and powerful moped-style e-bike. It excels for riders who prefer to use the throttle for most of their riding, appreciate the comfort of a full suspension and fat tires for cruising on various surfaces, and need reliable braking performance. Its robust motor handles most urban and light trail hills with ease.

However, if you're someone who prefers to pedal actively and needs a higher, more adjustable seat for ergonomic pedaling, or if you require the smoother, more gradual power delivery of a torque sensor (which this bike doesn't have), you might want to consider alternatives. Also, if you need super-fast charging, the 7-hour charge time may be a drawback.

Bottom Line

The TST R002 E-Bike offers exceptional value for its price. It's a powerful, comfortable, and feature-rich e-bike that delivers a fun riding experience. With its strong motor, excellent brakes, and decent range, you'll feel like you've made a solid investment rather than settling for something cheap.
